Two Coasts: One Ocean
Inaugural Event to Launch Surfrider’s Vision of 100% Protection of our Coasts

The Surfrider Foundation, a non-profit environmental organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s ocean, waves and beaches will kick off a national effort to celebrate its network of coastal activists with two fundraising events, Two Coasts: One Ocean, in Montauk and Malibu on August 8th and September 19th, respectively.

Montauk is a beachfront town located on the easternmost tip of Long Island, where both social and commercial life revolve around the ocean, making clean water and beaches essential to the community’s livelihood. “Montauk is the perfect venue to highlight and celebrate the critical work and success of our chapter network. Just recently, our chapter stopped the US Army Corps of Engineers from destroying the downtown beach with a 3,000-foot-long by 15-foot-high sandbag wall,” said Dr. Chad Nelsen, Surfrider CEO. “Our Long Island chapter regularly hosts beach cleanups and maintains an all-volunteer water quality monitoring program, making them indispensable and essential to the safety and health of our coast.”

ref1As vital as ocean health is to the planet’s survival, these beaches are also home to families and the epicenters of two thriving subcultures. The Two Coasts: One Ocean events will be co-hosted by key figures in the ocean science and preservation communities of each locale. While Montauk is literally close to home for us, we’re not here to perpetuate East Coast versus West Coast beef so we’re commemorating the occasions by featuring videos from select hosts celebrating both coasts. We’ll be bringing you two videos a day (one representing East and one representing West) every day until the big event this Saturday. We dug through the crates (interwebs) to bring you some oldies but goodies that best highlight the multi-faceted differences and similarities of each coast as well as speak to Surfrider’s ultimate mission.

Here’s what you have to look forward to:

Wednesday, August 5th: West = Beastie Boy Mike D talking about relocating to Cali from NY and the best of both / East = Montauk’s own Quincy Davis waxing on about the perks of the off-season.

Thursday, August 6th: West = Author Susan Casey warns us about the effects of climate change on our oceans / East = Surfer and filmmaker Mikey DeTemple gives us an idyllic glimpse into the Montauk surf scene.

Friday, August 7th: West = Surfer and artist Kassia Meador is California dreaming with her crew / East = Montauk’s fave character Bruce Weber shares “ordinary pleasures and undiscovered treasures.”

Saturday, August 8th: West = Surfer Rob Machado talks about his “natural high” / East = Local fitness expert Adam Rosante helps get our bods beach ready.
